Skin pigmentation is caused by melanin synthesis by melanocytes in a process called melanogenesis. The more melanosomes reach the keratinocytes on the surface, the darker the skin becomes. In fact, the skin produces two types of melanin: pheomelanin in people with pale skin and red hair and eumelanin in people with darker skin and hair and people with black skin.

Melanin synthesis is made from the amino acid tyrosine. Tyrosine is oxidized in the presence of the enzyme tyrosinase and oxygen to dopa, which in turn is oxidized to dopaquinone. Dopaquinone is then spontaneously converted to leucodopachrome, which is easily oxidized to dopachrome. Dopachrome loses its carboxyl and is reorganized to form melanin.
